Commissioned piece for the Efímero/permanente project
The Museo Universitario del Chopo introduces a new space for artistic expression called Efímero/permanente. This annual program revitalizes the museum's garden area with specially commissioned art installations. The detonator: to dynamize other walkable areas of the "social center of the museum in drag".
The first commission is entrusted to Lapiztola, a collective that emerged on the streets of Oaxaca during the teachers' conflict and social movement of 2006. Since then, they have identified as a socially engaged graphic and urban art collective. Over their more than twenty-year career, they have drawn inspiration from everyday life in Oaxaca, blending Mexican iconography with contemporary urban elements to create characters with social impact. Their work appears in public and private spaces, both open and enclosed, as vibrant "bullets" of color and thought designed to surprise, provoke, and inspire political reflection in passersby.
In their speech at the Museo Universitario del Chopo, Lapiztola references the migration of people embarking on journeys in search of new opportunities. What mysteries does El camino hold? None are apparent, except through imagination. Lapiztola's mural presents a timeless sequence, with characters pointing to elements beyond the composition, encouraging viewers to embrace imagination, exploration, and discovery as ways to break the monotony of urban life. The mural concludes with a girl shielding the flame of a candle as a bird flies by, symbolizing the quest for an increasingly elusive freedom.
